As you may have read on the Home page, JPS will not post pictures, video or recordings from its investigations here on the web site.  The next logical question then is, "Why are you posting EVPs?"  The answer is simple.  The following EVP recordings are not from JPS investigations.  These were recorded by Joe and Diane when they had their own investigation group and are being presented here as examples of good EVP.  These were recorded in either their own home, the home of a family member or a public location so there is no issue about privacy.  Sit back, listen, and rest assured that your investigation will remain confidential.

What is EVP?

EVP stands for Electronic Voice Phenomena.  At its most basic level it is sounds and voices appearing on a recording that were not heard at the time the recording was made.  Some are very clear and require no enhancement to the recording to be heard and understood.  Others are very faint and burried in the noise of the recording itself and require some filtering to be brought out.  Either way, they are voices that don't belong where they are.  So, how did they get there?  We believe spirits use energy from their environment to manifest themselves.  That energy is what shows up on EMF (Electro Magnetic Field) meters.   Audio recordings, both digital and analog, are simply coherent fluctuations of a magnetic field.  It seems fairly straightforward then that if a spirit can manipulate this energy to be seen or move objects that it could also manipulate the energy to be heard on a recording.

Diane captured this EVP by the graves of a couple that died within weeks of one another.

They aren't listening

Diane recorded this within 5 minutes of beginning recording.

Cut off the recording

This was captured on New Years morning at about 2am.  Diane, my Mom and I were talking earlier about why we thought they were in the house.  Is this their answer?

We belong here

They seem friendly enough.

We help ya

I invite anyone that wants to to talk to us and it seems we receive an invitation in return.

Classes of EVP

CLASS - A
For an EVP to receive a Class A rating it must be a very clear voice and everyone that listens to the recording should agree on what is being said by the ghost or spirit.  Everyone who hears the voice must come to the same conclusion about what is said without being told by another investigator.  These voices do not need to be amplified or cleared up using a sound editing program and can be clearly heard straight from the recording device.  It does not have to be extremely loud but it must be clear on what is being said. Class A EVPs are the best captured and are the rarest to record.
CLASS - B
An EVP that can be understood and most people agree on what is being said will fall into the Class B category.  These EVPs might not be understood by everyone who listens to them and might even be heard as something completely different by other people that listen to the recording.  This class of EVP might need to be amplified using a sound editing program before they can be clearly understood.  To get a Class B rating the voice must be fairly clear and it should be easy to determine what most of the words are when analyzing with your computer.  This is the most common class of EVP captured.
CLASS - C
The Class C EVP are the worst quality voices that you can capture.  It is nearly impossible to understand what is being said, even with the help of computer enhancement. These EVPs are often just whispers or mumbled words and might even sound robotic.  The voice cannot be understood but the investigator still knows that it is an EVP if no one was talking during the recording session and human sounding voices can clearly be heard in the background noise.

How to record EVP

If using an analog recorder use an external microphone.  The internal motors will create a lot of extra noise that will have to be removed and listened through later if you use the internal mic.

There can be NO whispering while recording EVP.  It is natural that someone will not want to "interrupt" the recording so they will whisper.  Those whispers will very likely be picked up anyway and can lead to false positives.  Speak in a normal voice and let others know you are recording and should do the same.

Slate your recordings by stating the date, time, location, room and the names of those present.  If you do multiple short recordings, you can just state things that have changed, like the room you are in, the time and who is there.  This will be useful later when trying to identify who is saying what.  Also, if there are only 2 men in a room and a woman's voice is heard on tape you have stronger grounds for believing you have a real EVP.

Verbally explain why you are there and what you are doing.  Briefly explain that the recorder can allow us to hear the spirits if they have something they want to say.

Always be polite and do not taunt the spirits that may be present.  Would you want to help someone that was rude to you?

If actively asking questions, pause for about 15 seconds between them to allow time for a reply.
Explain any natural sounds that you hear while recording.  Examples would be a car passing or someone sneezing.  This will help the person that will later be listening to the recording to identify these sounds.
